Lord Selsdon in delicate situation over litter remarks
It’s easy to forget that every day we save our finances by avoiding fines that could otherwise pile up.

Lord Selsdon made comments which led reporters to believe that he had requested, and been given, information of vehicle owners who he had seen tossing rubbish out of their vehicles.
The comment may have been made in jest, since Lord Selsdon is saying that it had never happened, but is still being investigated to ensure that people’s data is protected and being treated in accordance with law.
The conversation originally surrounded the debate of the Littering From Vehicles Bill which promises a direct impact to violators by imposing a fine.
It seems that by threatening to affect finances, the hope is that the bill will be taken seriously and reduce inappropriate waste and control inconsiderate behaviour.
When you think about it, you make a positive impact on your own finances simply by avoiding the different types of fines:
- Parking—knowing, and following, the rules of parking can help preserve your funds. You might think the likelihood of being fined for improper parking is relatively low, but consider the impact to your finances if you are caught. Taking that risk is like throwing money away.
- Driving—parking is not the only thing we need to consider, but also our driving habits. Violating driving laws, or even driving recklessly can not only cause problems but can result in substantial fines that will put a dent in your finances.
- Behaviour—believe it or not, you could be fined for your lack of social graces. If you are caught swearing in certain public places, you could be subject to an on-the-spot fine.
- Information—supplying authorities with accurate and truthful information is essential to the justice system and society in general. If you supply intentionally false information to authorities you could suffer more setbacks to your finances.
