Thousands of music fans enjoyed the final star-studded Live 8 concert in Scotland yesterday (06.07.05).

Despite heavy rain, more than 60,000 people flocked to Edinburgh's national rugby stadium, Murrayfield, to see a glittering line-up of stars, including Annie Lennox - who was introduced by Hollywood actor George Clooney - and James Brown.

The show was the last leg of the Live 8 charity concerts, which have been staged to urge G8 leaders to combat poverty in Africa.

Opening the concert, British comedian Lenny Henry told the crowd: "Tonight is a night of celebration as we attempt to make poverty history."

The show started with a performance by Scottish band The Proclaimers who sang their hit song 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' to the delight of the crowd.

Another Scots music legend, Midge Ure, who - along with Bob Geldof - was responsible for Band Aid, treated the audience to his classic hit, 'Vienna', with comedian Eddie Izzard accompanying him on piano.

Live 8 organiser Sir Bob Geldof performed his Boomtown Rats hit 'Rat Trap'.

South African president Nelson Mandela stole the show with a pre-recorded big-screen message, saying: "Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that generation."
