An elderly widow was saved by her washing machine from a giant explosion that ripped through her property while she was making a cup of tea in her kitchen.
The massive explosion caused the roof and first floor of the property to come crashing down on Monday morning. But incredibly, Wendy Ayoub was shielded by her washing machine, saving her life.
Emergency teams, who were expecting to find her dead, were pleasantly surprised to see her alive in the remains of the two-storey detached house. Fire crews, who were fearing another blast, spent two painstaking hours removing rubble until they were able to pull her out. Wendy was immediately taken to the hospital where it was found that she suffered a broken ankle and minor cuts.
In a statement, she thanked medical staff and her rescuers. She wrote: “I am comfortable and recovering well.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the emergency services and hospital staff who have helped me.”
