On 20 May, UK TV audiences will say goodbye to TV series Mad Men featuring Jon Hamm, who plays the role of Don Draper. After years of playing a variation on a sharp-suited theme, will Hamm be typecast or will he forge a different path?
In his recent interview with GQ magazine, Hamm admitted that it was a tough decision to make. "[It's] hard, man. It's hard to let go. It'll hit you a couple of different ways at different times.”
"The one constant thing I've had in my career is now removed. And that's an eye-opener," he admitted. "Are people still going to take me seriously? Am I just going to do romantic comedies for the rest of my life? What's next? And I don't know, you know. I wish I was smug enough to have had a grand plan."
Experts agree that Hamm has all the reason to be concerned. After all, TV stars in the past, like Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Michelle Gellar, where unable to break free from being typecast despite numerous attempts. He can only hope that he’ll follow the footsteps of George Clooney who went from ER’s charming yet troubled paediatrician Doug Ross to one of Hollywood’s A-list.
