Large car bomb detonates outside police HQ in Egyptian capital

The police have been targeted by a series of explosions in Cairo.

At least six people have died and 100 have been wounded following a multitude of explosions in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.

Friday morning saw a massive car bomb kill four and wound over 70 outside the police headquarters in the city.

In the space of the next few hours, three more blasts went off causing further violence.

Egyptian Interior Minister Muhammad Ibrahim stated that it looked like the work of a suicide bomber.

He was quoted by the BBC: "A pick-up truck had two passengers inside, stopped outside the security cordon, and the suicide bomber blew himself up.”

The attacks took place on the eve of the third anniversary of 2011’s uprising which forced Hosni Mubarak to resign after decades of rule.

A group named Champions of Jerusalem has taken responsibility for the attack. In December last year, the same group bombed a security building resulting 16 fatalities and over 100 injuries. Idealogically, the Al-Qaeda inspired group is opposed to the Muslim Brotherhood.
