Katie Holmes' romance up the creek

Katie Holmes has split from fiancé Chris Klein.

The 'Dawson's Creek' actress, who began dating the 'American Pie' star six years ago, decided to call time on their romance but insists the break-up was amicable.

Her publicist told America's Us Weekly magazine: "They broke off the engagement but are remaining good friends."

The couple got engaged in 2003 after Chris popped the question during a holiday together.

He said at the time: "I really believe it's the natural evolution of a relationship. As you grow in your life, your relationships grow and mature. And that's what ours has done."

However, the couple never set a date for their nuptials because of their hectic work schedules.

Chris revealed: "We haven't set a date yet. Our jobs are very different from the normal 'nine to five where you go home' type situation. We're actually apart for long stretches of time."
