There is definitely a market for personalised registration plates, which many consider as their best car accessory – instantly visible and decidedly their own.
Below are the UK’s top 10 most expensive number plates:
1. '25 O': £518,000 – This is the most expensive number plate that was ever sold by DVLA. Bought by Ferrari dealer John Collins in 2014, the plate is now thought to be the best accessory of £10 million Ferrari 250SWB once owned by Eric Clapton.
2. 'F 1': £440,000 – This plate, which was assigned to Afzal Khan’s McLaren-Mercedes SLR, was the previous record holder.
3. 'S 1': £404,000 – Considered as Scotland’s first-ever number plate, it was won by an anonymous bidder in 2008. Reports said that it was used on an old Skoda.
4. '1 D': £352,000 – Although this doesn’t pertain to the pop group sensation One Direction, the plate number ranked number four. It was bought by Lebanese businessman Nabil Bishara.
5. 'M 1': £331,000 – The proud owner of this plate number is mobile phone businessman Mike McCoomb, who said that he bought it for his 10-year-old son.
6. 'VIP 1': £285,000 – Once used on the Popemobile, this is owned by billionaire Chelsea FC Roman Abramovich.
7. '51 NGH': £254,000 – This plate number was sold to anonymous buyer in the UK in 2006.
8. '1 RH': £247,000 – This plate number was bought more than 30 times its worth by determined bidder, businessman Robert Harverson.
9. 'K1 NGS': £231,000 – This is a royal plate that is believed to have been bought by an Arab Sultan in 1993.
10. '1 0': £170,000 – This minimalist plate was sold in Northamptonshire in 2009.
