Two days after a video showing a Jordanian pilot being burned alive was released, dozens of Jordanian fighter jets bombed ISIS targets but the airstrikes bore a personal message on the missiles: “For you – the enemies of Islam.” They targeted what are believed to have been training centres and weapon caches of the militant group.
Seemingly responding to ISIS’ own use of slick video productions to promote their actions, the Jordanian military released video footage of the strikes.
A statement read on Jordanian state television declared: “This the beginning and you will get to know the Jordanians.”
Reports confirmed that the fighter planes flew back to Jordan from ISIS-held territory in Syria and flew over the village where pilot Lt Muath al-Kaseasbeh was killed.
Meanwhile, Jordan’s King Abdullah II visited the airman’s relatives. The pilot’s father, Safi al-Kaseasbeh said that the planes had struck targets in Raqqa, ISIS’ de facto capital and the site where his son was captured in December.
“The homeland is entrusted to you all,” Mr Kaseasbeh said, in a reference to Jordan’s armed forces. “For your troops to honour Muath is to uphold your oath and to follow in his footsteps as soldiers for God, his prophet and Islam in defending this dear homeland.“
