Thomas Mair has appeared in court in connection to the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox. However, he refused to enter pleas and remained silent when asked to plead at the Old Bailey. The 52-year-old is accused of murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon.
Mr Justice Wilkie ordered that not guilty pleas be entered on his behalf. He then adjourned the case for further hearing on 28 October. The trial is scheduled to begin on 14 November.
Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire in June while on her way to attend a constituency surgery. She was elected MP for Batley and Spen at the 2015 General Election.
She was described as a “bright star” by then Prime Minister David Cameron and as “a much loved colleague” by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Mrs Cox, who is a mother-of-two, had previously worked for a number of charities including Oxfam, Save the Children and the NSPCC.
