Japan to spend over €350million on Fukushima leaks

Japan, in its effort to stop leaks of radioactive water, will spend €350million to build a frozen wall around the Fukushima nuclear plant.

As radioactive water continues to leak at Fukushima nuclear plant, Japan has announced that it will spend €350million to build a frozen wall to stop the leaks. 

Government spokesman YoshihideSugasaid that Japan “felt it was essential to become involved to the greatest extent possible.”

In 2011, a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan and crippled the nuclear plant. The cooling systems were knocked out to the reactors and three of them melted down. 

Temporary solutions include pumping water in to cool down the reactors. However, storing the resultant large quantities of radioactive water is proven to be very challenging for Tokyo Electric Power Company, the plant operator. 

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his government is committed to solving the problem. "The world is closely watching whether we can dismantle the (Fukushima) plant, including the issue of contaminated water."

The government is determined to work hard to resolve the issue."
