Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony have announced that they are to divorce.

The American Idol judge confirmed, at the weekend, that she and Anthony are splitting, after seven years of marriage.

A statement issued from the couple read:

"We have decided to end our marriage. This was a very difficult decision. We have come to amicable conclusion on all matters.

"It is a painful time for all involved, and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time.”

The singer turned actress married Anthony in 2004 and the couple have three-year-old twins; Max and Emme.

There were signs the pair's relationship was on the rocks recently, as, when 41-year-old Lopez met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at a Gala event in Hollywood, her husband and wedding ring were noticeably absent.

LopezÂ’s stylist Philip Bloch has given an insight into the split, telling the Mail on Sunday:

"[She] desperately did not want a third divorce. She fought to make it work for the sake of the children.

"Marc is very controlling. In the beginning she liked that because he stood up to her and in the early days he was very much in love with her and she was with him.

This is LopezÂ’s third failed marriage, after her divorces from Ojani Noa and dancer Cris Judd.

Anthony has two sons from his marriage to former Miss Universe, Dayanara Torres, Cristian, 10, and Ryan, seven.
