A recent study conducted in Washington has found that tomato-rich diet can help men reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 18%.
The study, which was published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, is the first of its kind and was aimed to develop a prostate cancer “dietary index” which consists of dietary components such as calcium, selenium, and foods rich in lycopene.
It added that in order to effectively reduce the risk of developing the cancer, the person has to take over 10 portions of tomatoes per week.
The study also revealed that tomatoes and tomato-based products are the most beneficial with a nearly 20per cent reduction in the risk of the second most common cancer in men.
Lead researcher Vanessa Er admitted that further studies need to be conducted to confirm the findings. However, she urged men worldwide to increase their intake of fruits and vegetables and to maintain a healthy weight. She added that staying active and taking dietary recommendations will also help.
