A recent study has found that the brain is stimulated in the process of moving with movers observed to remember twice as many experiences than had been expected.
According to polls, an average person moves home five times during their lifetime and found that it is the most stressful thing one could do – more so than divorce.
The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of New Hampshire, was participated by 1,100 test participants aged over 65 who were able to recall five memorable experiences they had had between 40 and 60. They were then asked to describe the emotion attached to each memory, which had to last no longer than a day.
The study said that youth is marked by new experiences, which could be one of the reasons why we remember so much from when were are young.
The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: said: ‘The temporal distribution of memories showed a marked relocation bump around the age of the most important residential move.
‘Although previous research has focused on the negative effects of relocation, the current findings suggest that transitions could have a positive effect on autobiographical memory’.
