Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for selling potentially lethal counterfeit airbags on eBay. During the raid on two properties in Dorset, the cops seized 100 suspected counterfeit airbags and a large quantity of airbag components.
Experts examined the bags that contain explosive chemicals.
Police have contacted 680 people believed to have bought the counterfeit airbags and fitted them or had installed.
A City of London police spokesman said: "We are still going through records and documents. It maybe these airbags were also being sold on other websites or through mail order."
All potential victims have been identified by police who traced their eBay payment records with the company selling the airbags under the names 'EU_Trading', 'OMNADRENIAK1984' and 'barbo2007.'
Supt Maria Woodall from the City of London Police said: "The counterfeiting of any device designed to save lives demonstrates the obscene lengths criminals will go to make money and their sheer disregard for those they are exploiting.
"We are working closely with Honda, the motoring industry and online auction platforms, to disrupt the sale of counterfeit airbags and car parts and ensure that they are permanently eliminated from the market.
