After a year-long FBI investigation of Hollywood celebrity hacking, Christopher Chaney, of Jacksonville, Florida, was found guilty of unauthorized access to computer and wiretapping. He was sentence to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors have confirmed that Chaney hacked the emails of more than 50 celebrities and the most notorious incident involved the nude photo of actress Scarlett Johansson.
US District Judge S James Otero, who put Chaney behind bars, said: “It's hard to fathom the mindset of a person who would accomplish all of this. These types of crimes are as pernicious and serious as physical stalking.”
Chaney, who previously pled not guilty to the crime, admitted he used the “forgot password” features of the email and used information available online to gain access to the email of celebrities.
After accessing the account, he reportedly obtained not just photos but also contracts, scripts, and other important documents.
Chaney forwarded several photos he obtained, including Johansson’s nude photo, to gossip websites. The actress said that the photo was intended for then-husband Ryan Reynolds.
