Desmond J Tobin, professor of cell biology, has debunked the most common hair myths saying that unlike what you have been probably told, you cannot save split ends or your hair from going grey.
In an interview with Radio Times, the director for the Centre for Skin Sciences at the University of Bradford answered all the burning hair-related questions.
When it comes to how often one must wash their hair, he said that it depends on the hair type. While those with dry hair can wash it weekly, those with thin hair, as well as those who live in a polluted city, should lather it more frequently.
Professor Tobin also revealed that contrary to what other people believe, hair does not clean itself if left unwashed for an extended period. He explained that whilst the oils produced by hair do help remove dirt, hair will never be as lustrous as freshly washed locks.
Addressing questions on how to make hair thicker and beat split ends, he replied: 'Most "thickening" is done by laying product onto the surface of the fibre to give it more bulk. Products may claim they can make that happen within the fibre rather than just on the surface, but that's not true,'
'And do you really think that split ends can miraculously repair? No, you clip that bit off and you start again.'
