It is now official that Grant Mitchell, the recently returned slaphead thug, is the most feared character in EastEnders.

Grant, played by Ross Kemp, won a latest viewer poll by landslide margin.

More than 60,000 people said he was the show's most frightening telly persona, which represented a massive 58.5 per cent of the total opinions submitted.

The news comes on the same day as Ross Kemp announced he is to stay in the Square for at least another three months and reaffirms his popularity and importance to the show.

Grant's rival gangster Johnny Allen, played by Billy Murray, scored second place in the most feared list but fell some 25,000 votes behind Grant.

Third place went to Chrissie Watts, played by Tracy-Ann Oberman, who may feel slightly hard done by considering it was her who finally got the best of Dirty Den.
