Nicole Kidman has become a United Nations goodwill ambassador.

The screen beauty - who is set to marry lover Keith Urban - will work towards improving women's rights and ending violence against them.

The actress revealed her family inspired her to take on the freedom fighting role.

She said: "My family and I always sat around the dinner table having political conversations. My father always said, 'You need to be involved. Don't be a voyeur, be a participator'."

Nicole said she also got interested in humanitarian work after filming her movie, 'The Human Stain'.

She added: "While shooting the film I met with a lot of women in abuse shelters and the stories I was told were so disturbing - and this in America.

"They very much contributed to me going, 'I have to find a way in which I can somehow help these people'."
