The Royal Bank of Scotland has announced a new account that offers a 40 per cent discount on Vodafone pay-as-you-talk mobiles.
The Student Royalties Account guarantees savings of between 16 and 120, depending on the handset chosen.
The offer is open to all students opening an account before August 31st of this year, irrespective of whether they have already begun their studies or are just about to start.
Unlike other UK banks the Royal Bank of Scotland allows students to open accounts as soon as they have been offered a place, whether conditional or unconditional.
Head of student banking at RBS, Andrea Aitken-Paige, advised students to open their accounts as early as possible: "Having early access to your account is invaluable as a student.
"It allows student loan payments to be made quickly, giving swifter access to cash for all those student essentials. This can alleviate some of the financial pressure felt when leaving home for the first time."
Students will also be able to top up the credit on their phones at any of the Royal Bank of Scotland's cash machines.
The student account also offers discounts on student-orientated entertainment, such as nightclubs, concert tickets, DVDs, and other items such as books, CDs and money off travel and holidays.
