Veteran Hollywood actress Glenn Close is set to make the switch to the small screen, by joining hit US cop show The Shield.
Close - who has racked up five Oscar nominations in the course of her career for movies such as Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons - is set to play a police captain in the fourth series of the highly-acclaimed show.
She will appear in all 13 episodes of the series and will "shake our Shield world upside down", executive producer Shawn Ryan told Hollywood industry magazine Variety.
The new series, which will see explosive tensions between Close's character and Detective Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis, is due to be screened in early 2005.
"We wouldn't have been comfortable pursuing this storyline if we hadn't gotten an actress of Glenn's undeniable abilities", Ryan added.
