Is this the end for the popular music festival?

Soon we could be saying goodbye to Glastonbury due to lack of demand and the current economic climate.

The 41 year old festival may be shut down in the next few years according to Glastonbury organiser, Michael Eavis.

He explained that the festival is “on the way out” and could possibly be forced to close in “three or four years.”

The 75 year old organiser told the Times that the reason for the closure of the event is: “Partly it's economics, but there is a feeling that people have seen it all before,"

"Womad and Latitude are not selling out ... We sell out only because we get huge headliners."

This statement is ironic as the event has sold out within hours of tickets being released for many years.

This yearÂ’s event sold out in two hours, even though headliners were not announced.

Eavis added that foreign festivals such as Benicassim in Spain have had an impact on the decline of UK festivals due to nicer weather and being cheaper.

2012 sees Glastonbury take a year off to make way for the London Olympics but the festival will return in 2013.

It has been said that Eavis already has lined up the headliners for 2013.
