Germany to build its own separate German-only Internet

After the NSA spying revelations rocked global trust, Germany now looks set to build their own Internet closed off from the rest of the world.

The Germans are obviously not very happy with America’s National Security Agency (NSA) levels of spying, so much so that they are now planning to build their own separate, German-only internet.

The New York Times reports that "German executives, and some politicians, are beginning to talk of segmenting the internet” so they don’t have to be concerned about classified information getting into the hands of US intelligence services.

The report added that the Germans are not sure if their data is safe with Google and other American-based firms who can easily pass the information on to the NSA either voluntarily or when compelled by law. This concern stemmed from classified documents that were leaked by Edward Snowden.

The New York Times added that the chief executive of telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom has confirmed that it is now working on ways to stop electronic messages from “unnecessarily” crossing the Atlantic.

Germans were shocked after it was revealed that NSA harvested data about phone calls and emails from European citizens and even tapped the phone of chancellor Angela Merkel. This led them to ask for the resignation of the US intelligence chief.
