LittleBigPlanet
Format of choice: PS3
Year of release: 2008
'LittleBigPlanet' was tipped as one of the year's biggest releases. Under the guise of a platforming title, it broke free of the 2D genre constraints by adding unparalleled user creation and adaptation capabilities from costume tweaks to full blown level creators, but then controversy struck.
When passages of the Qu'ran featured on the soundtrack, it was feared that the title would be offensive to Muslims and was shelved in October before returning in November with amended songs.
Its brief emergence was just enough time for critics worldwide to hail the small scale, slow burning title as a masterwork, brimming with depth and replayability as well as a strong emphasis on online partnerships. And now it's back on sale everyone can see if they were right. But what broke the mould before it?
