Football 'match fixing' arrests

Reports confirm that six men were arrested in connection with football match-fixing investigation in English football.

BBC has reported that six men, which include at least three footballers who are not linked to any professional clubs, were arrested by officers from the National Crime Agency that are investigating the alleged match-fixing in English Football. The suspects are believed to be held by the police in Midlands.

NCA, which is working closely with Gambling Commission and the Football association, launched the investigation this year to stop organised and serious crime.

A spokesman said: "This is an active investigation and we are unable to provide further detail at this time."

Meanwhile, FA, which said that it is aware of the arrests, issued a statement. It reads: "We have worked closely with the authorities in relation to these allegations. The FA will make no further comment at this time due to ongoing investigations."

"The Gambling Commission said it had provided advice, intelligence and expertise in supporting the investigation and continues to liaise with the NCA and FA."

Meanwhile, Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey reacted to the news saying: "The threat of corruption is something that the Football League and the other football authorities treat with the utmost seriousness.

"The integrity of our matches and our competitions is the bedrock of the domestic game."
