Spending too much time on Facebook during Christmas season and seeing all those ‘perfect’ families and holiday photos can make you feel miserable than festive, research suggests.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen said that such activity could create feelings of envy particularly if one lurks on social media without connecting with anyone. It added that "regular use of social networking such as Facebook can negatively affect your emotional well-being and satisfaction with life" due to “unrealistic social comparisons”.
They added that if you find yourself depressed by the boasts and posts of others, it would help to take a break from using social media. The study also suggests that instead of lurking, engage in conversation and connect with people as this tends create a more positive experience.
