Euro 2016: France calls for alcohol ban in match zones.

France is introducing an alcohol ban following flashpoints of violence between England and Russia fans in Marseille.

 

UEFA immediately condemned the violence and ordered host cities to ban alcohol in the 48 hours before each game.

 

Bernard Cazeneuve said: "It is absolutely necessary that the national federations whose supporters create incidents of this nature be punished for what happened inside the stadium, and also outside,"

 

"I have asked for all necessary measures to be taken to prohibit the sale, consumption and transport of alcoholic drinks in sensitive areas on match days and the day before, and on days when fan zones are open," he added.

 

"The events which took place in Marseille yesterday evening are unacceptable. Unacceptable for the authorities, unacceptable for society, unacceptable for football lovers,"

 

Earlier a UEFA statement said: "The UEFA Exective Committee has warned both football associations that - irrespective of any decisions taken by the independent disciplinary bodies relating to incidents inside the stadium - it will not hesitate to impose additional sanctions on the Football Association (FA) and the Russian Football Union (RFU), including the potential disqualification of their respective teams from the tournament, should such violence occur again.

 

"We urge both the FA and the RFU to appeal to their supporters to behave in a responsible and respectful manner."
