Sir Elton John has hit back at George Michael in their war of words - insisting his pride could be his downfall.

The flamboyant superstar has retaliated against Michael's claim that he was responsible for creating a "soap opera" around his life.

Sir Elton told US chat show host Ellen DeGeneres: "People always know that I will be there to help them.

"Some of them don't want the help, because they haven't reached the point in their life where they're going to ask for it.

"It took me 16 years to ask for help. Pride can kill you."

Elton is said to have been shocked by Michael's recent bitterness, telling a friend: "Did I crash George's car? Was I found slumped over the wheel? No!"

The former friends have been feuding since 2004 when the 'Rocket Man' singer claimed George - who was found slumped at the wheel of his car earlier this month - was suffering from a deep-rooted unhappiness.
