Egypt’s former president faces another trial over ‘terrorist plot’

Ousted Egyptian president will face a second trial for alleged terrorist plot as confirmed by state television.

Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, who is currently on trial for supposedly inciting the murder of opposition protesters last winter, will face a second trial for an alleged terrorist plot devised in collaboration with foreign groups, says state television.

The latest charges appear to be the conclusion of an investigation on claims that the Brotherhood had conspired with Hamas to facilitate a jailbreak during Egypt’s 2011 uprising.  During that time, a spokesman for the brotherhood said that the charges were baseless.

Prosecutors alleged that Brotherhood is the one to blame for string of attacks on police and army officers in after Morsi was ousted. They also claimed that the group was party to an eight-year-old agreement for Hezbollah and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to train Egyptian Islamists.

Morsi, who was held incommunicado after his removal in July, only resurfaced at the start of his first trial in November.

Meanwhile, Morsi supporters have been staging near-daily protests asking for his reinstatement.
