In a shock live TV announcement, interim Prime Minister Hazen el-Beblawi surprised the Egyptian nation by saying that his entire cabinet will stand down. More surprising is the fact that he did not provide more information as to who will take over nor an explanation for the group’s decision.
He said: "Today the cabinet took a decision to offer its resignation to the president of the republic.”
The announcement came less than a year after the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi overthrew the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
Beblawi’s government’s was sworn in on July 16, 2013. In recent weeks, he has been slammed by media for his apparent indecisiveness and failure to bring in effective economic policies.
The cabinet’s resignation hasn’t helped the country yet and the shift comes at a time when Egypt’s business, national security, and tourism industry are all in turmoil.
Rumours have been reported that Field Marshal Sisi, who is currently the country’s defence minister, engineered the move so he can run for president.
