A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has hit New Zealand

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 has hit New Zealand on Friday, 16th August. The quake affected Wellington, which is situated on the North Island.

The 6.5 magnitude quake happened near to Seddon at 2.30pm local time (2.30am GMT). Following this, there were aftershocks.

The BBC stated in one report that following the first quake which had a 6.5 magnitude, came a 5.7 aftershock.

The Daily Mail has said in one report that a quake with a 6.5 magnitude hit and at least six aftershocks were 5.0 magnitude or stronger.

It is understood that no serious injuries have been reported.

Although there have been reports of power cuts.

Wellington, which is New Zealand’s capital city, is located on the south-western tip of the North Island. The country comprises of the North Island and the South Island.
