The BBC sci-fi drama Doctor Who will marks its 50th anniversary with a one-off production about the creation of the show. The special episode will commemorate the first four-part adventure of Doctor Who broadcast on November 23, 1963.
The production will be called 'An Adventure in Space and Time'. It will familiarize the show’s fans on how the story of the Time Doctor came to life in the early 1960s.
Writer Mark Gatiss describes it as the ‘story of how an unlikely set of brilliant people created a true television original’. It will also touch on how William Hartnell, the actor who played the first incarnation of the Doctor, moved from his previous hard-man roles to become a ‘hero’ known by millions of children.
The production is a ‘dream come true’ for Gatiss, who said: “I’ve wanted to tell this story for more years than I can remember!”
Executive producer Steven Moffat said: “The story of Doctor Who is the story of television – so it’s fitting in the anniversary year that we make our most important journey back in time to see how the Tardis was lunched.”
The drama will air for 90 minutes on BBC Two next year. Further details, including the casting, are yet to be confirmed.
