Following warnings from US media that al-Qaeda in Syria and Yemen are developing bombs to smuggle on planes, airport security is being tightened amid direct flights into the US and some in the UK.
UK Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin stated that in the midst of “credible threat” measures were being taken to ensure public safety.
DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement: "We are sharing recent and relevant information with our foreign allies and are consulting the aviation industry.
Meanwhile, former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said that she took the threat seriously. She added: “We have to remain vigilant.”
It is thought the measures could include more thorough screening of passengers, checks of shoes and electronic devices.
At Manchester Airport, it is believed that extra swab machines will be used to allow staff to swab hand luggage immediately before boarding.
