Coronation Street legend Vera Duckworth (played by Liz Dawn) could make a spectacular return to the soap - as a ghost.
Corrie bosses are tipped to bring the battle-axe back two years after her funeral.
Various reports suggest that Vera will reappear before husband Jack (Bill Tarmey) leaves the famed cobbles in December.
A Corrie insider told the Sun: "The scriptwriters have been trying to come up with a fitting end for Jack and the ghost idea has become a big hit among the crew."
The quirky plot device has been used controversially before in soap operas, notably with Bobby Ewing famously returning to Dallas after being killed in a car crash.
The source added: "It would be the most dramatic return from the grave since Bobby came out of the shower in Dallas."
Actress Liz Dawn left the show in 2008 after being diagnosed with incurable lung disease emphysema. It hasn't been confirmed if the Corrie actress will be well enough to perform on screens again.
Her onscreen husband Jack Duckworth moved away from Weatherfield to live with new love Connie Rathbone earlier this year, but he is expected to make a return before leaving completely.
A number of Coronation Street plotlines are in development in line for its upcoming 50th anniversary.
