Sean Wilson, who plays Corrie male nurse Martin Platt, is being written out of the soap after 20 years.
The decision to axe Wilson, 40, came as a surprise to the actor. Speaking from his home in the Pennines, he said: "I've been considering my position for some time. I've really enjoyed my years in the show."
Street producer Tony Wood took the decision to axe Martin because fans were growing tired of his character, despite his gripping storylines with killer Katie.
At a long-term story conference earlier this week, the producer confirmed Wilson's departure.
"We felt that there was nowhere left for his character to go at the moment", he said, adding that they were also in discussions as to how the hapless cradle-snatcher will depart.
Coronation Street has enjoyed a resurrection in recent months, culminating in snatching the coveted Best Soap award away from EastEnders in last weekend's British soap awards.
