Automotive company Ford has introduced an online calculator to help workers calculate how much time and money they spend on commuting using simple data about the individual’s daily commute. The site then shows users what else they could get for the same amount of cash and time.
For instance, it can show that 220 minutes on a public transportation every single day equates to around 4.5 years of the individual’s life. In terms of cost, the site suggests that the amount of money spent over the course of one’s career could be enough to buy a 167-square metre house on the tropical island of Bali.
The website said that the average length of EU commute is 37.5 minutes per day; it’s 54 minutes in the UK.
The tool also highlights that a journey using multiple forms of transport is more likely to be stressful.
Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics has found that "commuters have lower life satisfaction, a lower sense that their daily activities are worthwhile, lower levels of happiness and higher anxiety on average than non-commuters".
