Shoshana Roberts, an actress living in New York City, has released a video that quickly went viral showing how she was catcalled 108 times while walking silently around Manhattan's streets in August.
A hidden camera caught strangers' interactions with the actress who was wearing plain clothing and displayed no signs of interacting with the crowds as she simply tried to walk from A to B.
It has been reported that the actress is receiving rape threats.
Emily May, co-founder and executive director of Hollaback! which is the company that the Public Service Announcement was made through, said her office has received threatening phone calls and Roberts herself was targeted with emails that she is now reporting to the police.
“Unfortunately, the behavior that we see on the streets, we also see online,” May told the Daily News. “We were horrified by what we were seeing but we weren’t shocked. It’s part of the culture. It’s part of something we’re looking to change the root cause of so people aren’t harrassing on the streets and on the Internet.”
