In an article published on Healthista, ageing expert Professor Preston Estep has listed down the food that you should eat to keep your brain as healthy as possible. He recommends loading up on food that are on low iron and glycemic index to halt mental decline.
What separates ‘good’ carbs from ‘bad’ carbs is the length of time between when the carb is eaten and when it reaches the peak level in the bloodstream. The faster this is, the more dramatic effect the carb has on your body. Foods with high GI increases blood glucose levels more than those with medium or low GI. As a reference, food with GI below 55 is best while those above 75 are bad for your mental health.
The best food choices for your mental health include:
· Low-GI rice including parboiled medium-amylose rice (Thai Jasmine), long-grain rice, basmati white rice, wheat pasta, and cous cous
· Low-GI pasta. The recommended serving is 200 grams of cooked pasta per person
· Sourdough bread – Cook bread from scratch if possible using flour that is not enriched with iron
· Refined barley, which has the lowest GI of grains
· Sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas and hummus
