French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni have welcomed their first child together; a baby girl.

The French First Lady gave birth on 19 October at the Clinque de la Muette in Paris, according to Le Figaro.

Further details about the couple or their new addition are yet to be released.

Bruni was rumoured to be expecting a child back in May, but the model and actress only confirmed the news in July.

In an interview last month, she said she would do everything to protect her child from media attention, telling Spet a Huit:

"I understand the media interest, and I donÂ’t see any inconvenience in it for myself or my husband, but when it concerns the children, itÂ’s not impossible.

"I will do everything to protect this infant, and I’ll be absolutely rigorous. I will never show photos of this child. I will never expose this child.”

Sarkozy and Bruni met in 2007 and married several months later in Paris.
