Nationwide has launched a free guide aimed at helping its members save money through energy efficiency.

The guide has tips and information which, if used, should enable people to make their homes more energy efficient.

The new guide also sets out other environmental improvements that can be made around the home, while providing illustrations of a range of home improvements depending upon budget and house type.

Nationwide's commercial & treasury director, Stuart Bernau, said: "As we approach the autumn and the nights draw in, now is the time to think about ways of saving energy."

According to Nationwide, if every member who owns their own home undertook one single low cost energy efficiency improvement, collectively they would save over 34 million.

"Quite often saving energy is easier than you think," Mr Bernau continued. "For example you could save around 7 a year in lower electricity bills just by changing one light bulb to an energy efficient one."

He concluded: "With energy prices expected to rise steeply over the next few months, we hope the guide will help our 11 million members make their home more energy efficient and save money too."
