British film drama 12 Years a Slave, which is directed by Steve McQueen and which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, has picked up seven nominations including best film drama at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. McQueen, who is nominated for best director, will compete against David O’ Russell whose film American Hustle also received seven nods.
Meanwhile, Idris Elba, who is nominated for his role as Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom, will compete with fellow British actor Ejiofor for best actor in a film drama.
Other actors that were nominated for the same category include Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, Robert Redford for All is Lost, and Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips.
Elba said: "I'm truly humbled and honoured to be acknowledged for two projects that, though very different from one another, are both extremely personal and special to me."
Meanwhile, Ejiofor said that the nomination is an “incredible recognition.”
He added: "The response to 12 Years A Slave and Dancing On The Edge [a TV project fpr which he is also nominated] from the public and media alike has been overwhelming and I am so very grateful. To have been a part of these amazing projects was a gift in itself.”
