Cheese and pickle has been revealed as the nation's favourite sandwich filling.
According to a new poll by Aldi, a simple cheddar and pickle stuffing is the tastiest filler despite the huge variety of exotic snacks available on the shelves.
Voters in the poll tuned their noses up at pretentious paninis and riveting wraps and favoured the classic fillings throughout the list.
The mouth-watering BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomatoes) came in second place, followed by tuna and mayonnaise in third position.
So has the art of sandwich making gone out of fashion? Should we have stuck with the simplicities as created by the Earl of Sandwich in the 4th century?
