A Croatian teenage boxer has been banned for life after he attacked the referee who stopped his fight.
18-year-old Vido Loncar’s vicious attack, which took place at the European Youth Boxing Championship in Zagreb, resulted in Polish referee Mageja Dziurgota going to hospital for treatment.
Lancar, who was initially calm after the referee deemed that his Lithuanian opponent Algirdas Baniulis was the winner, suddenly got up and punched the referee in the head and followed the shocking assault up with several more blows.
In video footage, the referee was seen falling down after numerous punches before Baniulus runs away from the ring. Seconds later Loncar was dragged out of the rings by his ankles and was arrested.
The referee, according to the reports, is still in the hospital.
Video showing the incident has been uploaded to YouTube and was viewed more than 200,000 times.
Croatian boxing director Zeljko Mavrovic said: "I believe that he is not a butcher or as bad as this act makes him look. This was part of his excessive ambition in that moment."
