Remember the good old days? Where people actually had time for one another? Where brunches were long and people talked on the phone. Remember the time when people went for long, relaxing walks together, and when people gathered together to play board games for entertainment?
Board games date back well past 2600 BC. The evolution of board games has proven that although our lives become busier and busier, as humans, we require time for relaxation and enjoyment. This release is often found in the form of entertainment such as board games with friends.
Back in the 60’s and 70’s game night was something most circles of friends held. One night a week would be dedicated to hosting an evening where family, friends or colleagues would come together, enjoy cocktails and snacks and play hours of some of the world’s most popular games.
While game night is still a widely popular thing people still do (especially among the younger generation as a means to ‘bring-retro-back), the world has seen a shift from playing physical board games to playing digital games.
Games like Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja have taken the world by storm, revolutionising the digital world of gaming and introducing (and addicting) thousands and thousands of people. These mobile-friendly gaming apps allow for users to remain constantly entertained by use of their mobile phones.
As people became more and more digitally and mobile orientated, everything began to become digital. Companies created websites and social media accounts in order to have an online presence, people connected imagery and ideas by using hashtags to link thousands of themes to one another, and communicating became something people do with their fingers rather than their mouths.
Classic board games have been reinvented in a sense by becoming digital games. People of all ages began downloading games and visiting gaming websites to play online.
Some of the first classic games to go digital were solitaireand tetris. Followed shortly by games like bingo, monopoly and scrabble. Words with friends is among the top 10 most downloaded games for Android and iPhone users - connecting thousands of players over a game of, essentially, scrabble.
