Behavioural Biometrics New Security Technique?

Behavioural biometrics is the latest front in the cyber-security war.

allsign, a behavioural biometrics firm, unveils software that analyses how you walk and hold your phone to fight fraudsters. Zia Hayat, the firm’s chief executive, said: "By using the accelerometers and gyroscopes in your phone we can gauge your wrist strength, your gait, and we can tell you apart from most other people with a one in 20,000 accuracy - roughly equivalent to the accuracy of a fingerprint,"

 

"If the phone isn't moving but is being operated, you might assume malware is working it," says Mr Hayat.

 

"We can even measure air pressure using the barometer on the latest smartphones, which can give us another indication of where the phone is and whether that corresponds to where the user says he is."

 

This could be the latest front in the cyber-security war because even if a fraudster has managed to steal your phone and your bank details, they will still be denied access by the behavioural software.

 

Eyal Goldwerger, chief executive of BioCatch, another behavioural biometrics company, says: "Authentication is all well and good but if fraudsters are already inside your system it's no use. Most instances of banking fraud occur after user authentication has taken place."
