A bottle of £3 wine available from supermarket shelves has scooped itself a prize at the world's most prestigious wine awards, proving that cheap wine can impress an expensive palate.
The French red, named the Corbires Languedoc-Roussillon, was recommended in a blind taste test at this year's Decanter World Wine Awards.
It won equal praise as a German Riesling which retails at £89.99.
Cheaper by the dozen
The Corbires was not the only cut price bottle of wine to do well.
A £3.29 Vifia Decana Rosado 2007, available from budget store Aldi - and Sainsbury's So Organic 2007 white selling for £5.15, also won praise.
Tesco also had success. Their Finest Spanish NV Pedro sherry, available for £5.49, won a bronze medal.
In total 2,586 wines available for less than 10 within the UK won prizes and commendations.
Judged by the best palates in the world
Decanter's tastings director Christelle Guibert commented: "This year's competition attracted more entries from producers across the globe than ever before.
