Baftas 2014: 12 Years A Slave and Gravity the big winners

Gravity wins six Baftas including Best Director; 12 Years a Slave named Best Film.

12 Years a Slave was chosen as the Best Film in this year’s Bafta Awards.

Accepting the trophy, British director Steve McQueen said: "Thank you, Mummy for everything, never give up.

"Right now there are 21 million people in slavery, I just hope 150 years from now, I hope our ambivalence will not allow another film maker to make this film."

Another big winner is British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor who went home with the coveted Best Actor trophy for his role as the slave of the title in McQueen’s film.

Meanwhile, space thriller Gravity won the most number of awards including Outstanding British Film and Best Director. Accepting his trophy, Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron said: "I consider myself a part of the British film industry.

"I've lived in London for the last 13 years and almost half of my films have been in the UK.

"I guess I would make a very good case for curbing immigration."
