Marcus Volke, a 28-year-old Australian chef, killed his girlfriend before cooking her and ultimately taking his own life, police officials have stated.
Volke was evading officers and became holed up in his Brisbane apartment. He escaped out into the nearby alleyway whereby he slashed his own throat.
When officers entered the apartment, they found body parts belonging to Volke's girlfriend in a pot on the stove.
It appears that the chef had tried to cook another woman as well, as an Indonesian woman's mutilated body was found in bins outside the premises as well.
Police initially responded to the foul odour coming from the building.
"He was happy and he was coming home for Christmas, everything was normal," the chef's mother Dorothy Volke told the Courier-Mail from her home in Victoria.
Resident Courtney Reichart told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC): "On Saturday when I came out for a walk, [the smell] made your eyes water, it made you want to be sick.
"The smell it was like as if somebody had put out some dog food or red meat and left it out for a few days.
"It makes you feel sick that that poor girl sat there for however many days and we've been walking past, living our lives and thinking 'hmmm what's that smell', but you don't put two and two together.
"You don't think that a bad smell equals a murder."
