It seems that Cannes Festival did not only attract famous people but also professional thieves. After $1.4million worth of gems were reported stolen on the first week of the festival, another item of jewellery; this time a £1.7million diamond necklace, went missing on Thursday during a star-studded party.
The necklace, according to Fawaz Gruosi, the founder of the De Grisogono, was part of the firm’s 20th anniversary collection that was loaned to 20 models as they paraded at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes. Guests included Hollywood celebrities like Paris Hilton and Sharon Stone.
Cannes police has confirmed that investigation is on-going and that they are trying to find out if the necklace was indeed stolen, or if it was just a problem of inventory or loss.
This is the second incident of theft in the 2013 Cannes Festival. On the first week of the 12-day event, another Swiss jeweller, Chopard, lost gems that are reportedly worth $1.4million. According to police reports, the gems were placed in a safe inside the Suite Novotel room, which was rented by an employee of the jeweller.
On May 16th, it was discovered that the entire safe was removed from the wall. A police source confirmed that the thieves were able to enter the room without forcing the door or using the magnetic key .
