89-year-old Scotsman Jock Hutton, who is a war veteran, relived his experience of the D-Day landings by parachuting into the same field in France that he landed in 70 years ago.
Joined by more than 300 soldiers, they marked the 70th anniversary of the first stages of D-Day. The troops came from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and France.
Mr Hutton, who was obviously the centre of attention during the event, was strapped to a current member of the parachute display team. He said: “should be cushy. All I have to do is put my feet up.”
Prince Charles and senior military figures watched the descent.
The program of events continued into the evening and throughout Friday.
Coordinated fireworks displays were scheduled to light up the cost from Sword Beach in the east up the Normandy coast to Utah Beach in the west.
The Prime Minister will join the event and will be present during the midnight vigil at Pegasus Bridge to mark the moment the first soldiers landed in France on June 6, 1944.
